Kaus on Bush's Speech
An uninspired attempt to buy off immigration conservatives with a temporary National Guard deployment and talk of "technologically advanced" border security. If conservatives are impressed by this, they're the cheapest dates around. This means you, Bill O'Reilly! ~Mickey Kaus, Slate

Oh I don't know. 'conservatives' usually are pretty impressed by increased unjust invasion into their privacy in the name of security. It's what Democrats do best, and where Republicans invariably follow.
I suspect the national id card will be a big hit. After all, if using the patriot act and other equally prudent measures aren't beyond the pale, then move invasive national id's are just the ticket for the type of invasion called for with a cheap date where taking em out first to dinner isn't necessary.
In fact, what more than a few charming words could or should conservative expect? Given their none too respectable past?
As I was standing in line at the bank this morning, I was greeted by a poster of a husband hugging his wife with the words underneath :"we treat our family like customers" hmmm?
Likewise with national id's, just another public servicing.
