Last night’s GOP debate was the first debate on either side that I actually sat through in this perpetual campaign.
To listen to Rudy spin the tale, one would get the impression that the New York Times was constantly on the warpath against him. He conveniently neglects to mention that the Times endorsed him for re-election in 1997.
By all rights, a Times endorsement OUGHT to be a kiss of death. As much as any mainstream media outlet, the Times legitimized the War Party’s disinformation campaign in the run-up to the war. (Mission accomplished, Judith Miller.) Not that Rudy will ever mention this fact either.
Did you notice how McCain referred to the surge as a “strategy”? The surge is merely a change in tactics, not a change in strategy. That’s precisely the problem. The strategy remains as flawed today as it ever was under Rumsfeld. It’s bad enough when some neocon or neoliberal pundit makes this mistake, but when it comes from the mouth of the supreme National Security Candidate … ugh.
