I think that people definitely hold this view and that they are of some consequence.  The problem is that the war-supporting Republicans and conservatives (conservative used loosely, of course) think that these people are of a really huge consequence and that they are guilty of terrible sins that need to be constantly identified (think of all the anti-leftism columns on Townhall).  Constantly attacking these far-left-wing type people who are of some but not a lot of consequence allows the war-supporters to obtain credibility while ignoring sane people like yourself.
