Brownback wants to be Guiliani's running mate. His reputation on abortion can give a fig leaf to cover Guiliani's deficiency in that area. It's like how Senator Gore's reputation in 1992 assisted Governor Clinton, who had a terrible environmental record in Arkansas. Gore's selection proved to be a meaningless addition to the ticket, in terms of presidential policy over the next eight years, but it did the trick of pacifying grassroots Democrats who were passionate about protecting the enivronment. I think that Brownback cares more about his own political career than he does about unborn human life, so a Giuliani endorsement is a rational move for him.

If Brownback is trying to extract concessions of some kind from another candidate he really plans to endorse, wouldn't the threat of a Giuliani endorsement make for good leverage?

I hope Brownback won't demonstrate for us the art of being compromised.
