I too find the story of "Islam as guardian of Greek learning in the middle ages" to be a little silly, as if all Muslims did was hold on to Greek texts. Truly, however, the most important books translated from Arabic into Latin in the Middle Ages were not Aristotle and Ptolemy, but Ibn Rushd, al-Razi, Ibn Sina, Ibn al-Haytham, al-Khwarizmi, al-Biruni, etc., i.e. the most up-to-date (at the time) and original contributions to the theoretical and experimental sciences (e.g. mathematics, astronomy, optics, medicine, and chemistry).
