Hi. I'm no expert on this, but isn't the Sergianstvo issue relevant here? I can only go from what my mother informs me. Although a lifelong ROCOR member, she was certainly not happy with many of ROCOR stances and rigidity and she was very happy about the possibility of ROCOR merging with the Moscow Patriarchate. She always assumed, however, that such merger would only occur after Moscow's non-ambiguous acknowledgment of their collaboration with the Soviet regime and a recognition that this was a mistake. From what I know, though, the Moscow Patriarchate refused to acknowledged that "Sergianism" was a wrong and weak-willed compromise with the Soviet regime. Patriarch Alexi was, more than likely, a KGB informer (probably out of careerism and weakness rather than evil intent), but besides some generalized platitudes he never expressed remorse about his actions. Now my mother believes that ROCOR merged too soon. That it would have been better to wait until the current generation of compromised church leaders pass away.
