I just had the "Criticizing the President is not the same as criticizing the troops" argument yesterday. I provoked my contender by suggesting Bush and Cheney should dress like Huggy Bear, as it would suit their treatment of our troops.

For those who may not know, the circular green patches that can be seen from airplanes are the result of "God-Worshipping Christianists" performing strange rituals that involve water, dirt and seeds.

Plenty of people who don't know Iraq from Iran will rally 'round the President on patriotic grounds--our country is at war and we support our soldiers when they are fighting. There's also a reaction against the liberal élites who are Europe-oriented and rather hostile to what is to them "flyover America" (what are those circular green patches, anyway?).

These reactions don't stem from deep historical analysis or strategic thinking, and seem easy enough to exploit in the primaries.

An anti-interventionist politics that goes hand-in-hand with love of country is not on offer, except perhaps from Ron Paul, who's a fringe candidate at the moment.

A hard choice--dhimmitude vs. dimitude.
