It seems unchivalrous for someone who hangs so much on the judicial nominations not to mention Harriet Miers.

On education conservatives are a fighting one-handed, since the diagnosis they're willing to say out loud--that its the leftist teacher unions' fault--is only part of the problem. Until they learn that not every kid is smart enough to avoid being "left behind" their fight for better standards is going to be hobbled.

At least Bottum points out that Roberts and Alito have not yet proven themselves good appointments. You can never tell with a SCOTUS, so every time someone cites them as something conservative Bush actually did, one needs to put an asterisk by it.

Terrible. I wait to see what sort of endorsements the journal offers when next year comes around. With respect to authentic conservatism, the journal has lost sight of the "First Things."

I think that the "No Child Left Behind" stuff just reflects the rather unfortunate position conservatives find themselves in today. They get frustrated at the Dewey-ite tripe that gets foisted upon students by unelected school district bureaucrats, so they appeal to the federal government to mandate some sort of standards, etc. They're hearts are in the right place but the means they've chosen aren't exactly conservative.

This FT Bottum v. Novak feature is a bit of tweedledee and tweedledum. If you think Bottum's response is bad, wait until you get to Novak's ("Everything's just great, thanks!").

But, if J. Bottum producing this essay saved us from another poem, we'll I suppose we just have to be thankful.
