The argument of historical continuity as evidence of authenticity fails to satisfy a great many people, ranging from "postmodern" "emergent church"-types all the way to hardline Twelve Tribes/Commonwealth of Israel cultists, who all believe that they are reliving "authentic Christianity from the days of Acts." These are folks with Sola Scriptura emblazened upon their hearts, often circled 'round the campfire with a fearless and charismatic leader like (insert name here), who has provided them with a new "revelation." Squeaky and wholesome though they may be, Mormons fit right into this camp.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for any coherent apologetics to emerge from the Church of Latter-Day Saints. There's plenty in the LDS organization that belongs in a "big tent"; unfortunately, it's not the only circus in town.
