In 1982, my brothers and I spent the summer in Maryville, TN with my Aunt and Uncle. We went with them every Sunday to the Presbyterian Church which (then Gov.) Alexander also attended, and where I believe he was an elder. He was a very nice and very genuine person. My Aunt was a teacher, and she thought the world of Mr. Alexander. This had a little to do with Alexander's parents also being teachers, but more to do with the content of his character. That would have been reason enough to vote for him in the sorry mess that is the Senate.

My problem with Lott comes neither from his hairdo nor his Kerryism re Thurmond, which he no longer defends, but his addiction to pork, notably his support for a railroad that, if its critics are right, is surpassed in its uselessness and extravagance only by the legendary Bridge to Nowhere. My view may well be unrealistically puritanical, but there you have it.
