The True Interests of the people, we are told, lie in more free trade and globalization, and when the people express their dissatisfaction - which they do most every time they are asked - they are denounced for having yielded to the temptation to populist demagoguery. Counter-Revolutionary Sedition! Likewise, the True Interests of the people lie in grand crusades to transform the world into an exotically-attired version of Us, and when the people express their misgivings and display their insubordination by questioning the wisdom of such things, they are reproached for their tendency toward.... populist/leftist demagoguery! Isolationist Backsliding! Faster Please! We are leading you to the Promised Land, and you must not look back. Faster! Faster! Faster! The glorious, shining future awaits us!
